Camper Composer
Music Workshops Outings for People living with a disability
What is Camper Composer
Camper Composer is a unique music workshop outing for people living with a disability. As the name suggests, a specially modified campervan is transformed into a mobile music studio combining music workshops with outdoors recreational physical and independent living skills activities. Camper Composer is owned and operated by Alon Shai-Kaspi, a support worker for the last 25 years and a skilled music composer/performer.
Who is it for?
Servicing the center and northern suburbs of Perth, Camper Composer is for all of you who always desired the freedom of an individual music activity tailored to your choices abilities and passions. All you need to bring is your passion. You may be of any age or gender. You may have a need to learn, or to zone out and find your inner voice, or just be on a quest for outdoors music making fun. Welcome to the camper. Skilful composer, YouTube watcher, TikTok producer, or (like the rest of us) an eternal noise making beginner. The only requirement is that you are able to climb into the camper – unfortunately; at present the camper is not suitable for wheelchair. Self funded or Plan managed, give me a call and together we will compose a service plan to accomodate your circumstances.
How does it work
(Here’s One of many options of a day/session outing with Camper Composer)
I will be picking you up from home.
We will drive to and set up camp at a chosen location around our wonderful city.
We will warm up with a gentle morning walk & talk.
Based on my own experience as a musician as well as a support worker,
I know how intense and demanding music making can get.
I offer to break a full day's excursion into manageable time periods -
combining in van music making with a range of non music activities to keep us fresh.
Taking full advantage of the camper’s facilities, we will make ourselves morning tea.
During our morning tea we will decide what kind of music we would like to make today.
Our morning music session will take us all the way until it is time to prepare for lunch.
Camper composer encourages participants to take advantage of the camper’s cooking facilities, by shopping for and storing ingredients in the camper’s fridge, then preparing and consuming lunch on location.
Should you bring your own prepared lunch, choose to purchase takeaway or even eat at a restaurant,
I will happily accommodate that too.
During Lunch we will discuss our afternoon activity.
We may continue our music project where we are, we may drive to a different location for music, or decide to do something completely different. the choice is yours.
If you are working on an ambitious creative musical project, there is no rush.
Your project will be saved and you will be able to return to it on your next outing.
What kind of music ?
The style of music we engage with is entirely up to you.
Every participant brings different experiences and preferences into the camper.
The program is made out of three main stages that are design to ease newcomers into a comfortable workflow no matter the project.
1. Explore – The participant is introduced to the vast array of instruments, Recording equipment and tools. This stage is where every new comer to the camper begins but it’s a never ending one, as the process of discovery is infinite. I call this stage the ‘Toy shop Ice Braker’ as it helps in starting the creative process in a fun playful way
2. Play&Play - As well as playing the instruments, a series of musical games such as Call and Response (Vocal, instrumental), Rhythm and melody dictations, ear training, improvisation duets, musical story telling, Karaoke singing and many more, are there to further familiarity and creativity, and most importantly to associate music making with fun (the magic ingredient)
3. Compose – This is the stage where every participant gets to concentrate on her/his own personal musical interest. Be it writing and recording a song, meditating with sounds, Drumming, learning music theory, Music software, Jamming alone, Jamming with me, or with our made up band, sampling and playing with nature sounds, vocalizing, the list is endless.
